Anyone who knows me is aware that I am a ‘Fire & Extrication’ guy. I don’t do high-angle……although we do handle lots of products that fall under the line of special operations equipment.
I recently had the opportunity to spend a night with one of my customers and their extremely dedicated technical rescue crew (TRC). The Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Department – with stations based in Lions Head and Tobermory – has a dedicated group of men and women who have formed a very well-trained and well-equipped TRC to complement the already well-rounded fire and rescue crew.
We made our way out to the grotto at Parks Canada’s Cyprus Lake Conservation Area. Up until that Tuesday night, I had not experienced the true beauty of one of the most unique areas of Ontario. I now know why people are flocking to the area. The team quietly and efficiently went about pre-planning for a successful rescue like the one they had executed the week before. I was very impressed with the knowledge and skill they showed while being that close to a major drop off and on tricky ground. Because we are getting late in the year and we lose day light quickly, I had brought along one of the new Streamlight Rechargeable Telescoping Scene Lights with me – and we were all impressed with the light the new unit throws.
I am very lucky to have a phenomenal group of customers and friends and I am truly proud to be able to assist them with choosing equipment and with training – I always seem to come away having learned a new trick or method myself!
I hope – it being election time – that all of our candidates take the opportunity to meet and find out all they can about their local fire departments, police and paramedic agencies as most have little knowledge of what we all do.
